TRUE CHARACTER

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin;

Gladly. Jesus Christ sacrificed His life: gladly. What pure act of selflessness, compassion, and love.

How, then, as sons and daughters of the Almighty God, can we become like His Son, Jesus Christ? Surely, we will never be able to reach such a pure act of love.

Elder David A. Bednar said “Character is revealed, for example, in the power to discern the suffering of other people when we ourselves are suffering; in the ability to detect the hunger of others when we are hungry; and in the power to reach out and extend compassion for the spiritual agony of others when we are in the midst of our own spiritual distress. Thus, character is demonstrated by looking and reaching outward when the natural and instinctive response is to be self-absorbed and turn inward.”

In a world filled with so much hatred, opposition, discrimination, and judgement, it is so incredibly important to love, accept, and serve our fellow brothers and sisters. If it weren’t for our merciful Savior, Jesus Christ, we would not have the gift and opportunity to improve and experience joy in this life.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee;
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

It’s simple. Love others. Serve others. Give to others. Accept others. Turn outward, and become selfless. You are a representative of the One who expressed such pure love to all of us. It is after serving others that we, even through our own trials and hardships, will experience pure joy and true peace: in sharing the Light of Christ with others.

“And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.
And if I, whom ye call your king, do labor to serve you, then ought not ye to labor to serve one another?” – Mosiah 2:17-18
